The city of Veszprém lies on a dolomite wedged in between the wooded slopes of Bakony Hills and the Balaton Uplands. The thousand-year history of Veszprém, built on seven hills, can be seen concentrated in the historic buildings of the Castle Hill. Here you find the Bishop's Palaca, St. Michael Cathedral, the Gisella Chapel, Queen Gisella's Museum, and St. George Chapel. Veszprém's more recent history is embolied in the charasteristic Baroque town houses of the Castle. The view form the statues of St. Stephen and his consort, Quenn Gisella towering over the old city is breathtaking, just as the view from the Fire Tower at the other end of the Castle. The Castle houses several galleries, among them the Gallery of Modern Art (László Vass Collection). Theater-goers can choose from three theaters: the Petőfi and Pannon Castle Theaters, and, children's favourite, the Kabóca Puppet Theater. The well-known zoo opened its gates to visitors in 1958. You can choose from one permanent and two temporary exhibitions in Dezső Laczkó Museum, and the Bakony Regional House lets you have a glimpse into the life of the small estate in the nineteenth century.
