Northern Hungary
Mátraverebély is 90 km far away from Budapest, and 20 km from Salgótarján away. It is easily accessible by long distance bus because the road 21st runs through the village. It is also accessible by train, on the Budapest-Hatvan-Somoskő railroad.
Erected on romanesque foundations, the church is one of the most valued early gothic monument in Hungary.
Szentkút which has been incorporated within the village, is one of the most prestigious places of worship of the Virgin Mary. The holy place of worship is famous for its healing power, which is why tens of thousands make a pilgrimage to it on the dates of major Fair Days.
There are lots of marked tourists way in the woods of Mátraverebély. It is a perfect place for tourists and hunter.
The first church of the village was in 1210 mentioned in a document. In th 14th and 15th century the village used to belong to the Vereb clan. Saint Laszlo's well was first mentioned in a document dated 1290. Built in 1763 , the two steepled baroque church was given the status of Basilica minor by
Pope Paul IV. In 1970. A franciscan monastery joins the building on the east side.
The so-called Lourdes cave is to be found behind the outdoor altar on the western side of the church, and the caves of the hermits- from the 14th century- can be seen up in the hillside over the annexed buildings.
