Northern Hungary
It is laying next to the 21st main road, 20 km away from Hatvan, where is a turn to Sámsonháza. 7 kms from the turnout there is Márkháza. The little village is situated in the picturesque Kis-Zagyva valley, in the neighbourhood of Kisbárkány and Lucfalva, 20 kms far from Salgótarján. the nationwide Blue-Tour route is running next to the settlement. The area is very rich in game and natural values. There is a cultural event on Whitsunday in every year by the organization of the village's self-government. The modern styled church was built by the plans of István Szabó, Ybl-awarded architect. Library and culture centre are working in the village. On Márkháza we can see some charasteristic peasant houses with stepped gable roofs and porches with wooden breast walls from the turn of the 20th century. On the south the Buda-hill, on the north the Cuckoo-hill can be seen 440 and 455 metres high above the village.
The past of Márkháza
The name of the village was given after a knight's son Márk who lived in 1130 as the legend says. It was first mentioned in a document in 1548 which says the settlement was destroyed by the Turks. In 1554 a paper mentioned the name Pál Márkházi, who lost the castle of Ajnácskő and it went to turkish hands because a cheat. The name of the village was Tótmarokháza because of the slovakian settling after the Turkish occupation. The old called the village "corn village" because the people of Márkháza after the husking, they was hanging the bees on the fruit trees. The village has a small population, but they where the first who built a modern styled church.
