Kecskemét

Kecskemét, fusing all the beauty and values of the Great Plain is situated in the middle of Hungary, among the sand-hills between the Danube and Tisza rivers, on the Golden Sand ( "Aranyhomok" ). The settlement was established and developed at the crossing points of ancient traders' routes and the chapter of King Louis the Great from 1368 mentions it as a market-town. Kecskemét preserved this character for centuries; thanks to its climatic conditions the vegetable and fruit growing culture could develop. As a results of it the former market-town became by the turn of the century a fascinating city with wonderful buildings.Kecskemét with its some 110.000 inhabitants has been the capital of Bács-Kiskun county since 1950 and it turned into an economic, administrative, educational and cultural centre of the region.

The Main Square - with its charasteristic buildings - is known as one of the most beautiful downtowns in the country. Active life characterize the town nowdays as it serves for the scene of festivals and cultural events, which offer rich and various programmes.
