A glance into the past

From historical data, scattered findings and archaeological explorations in recent years, we have learnt that this part of the Great Plain was inhabited as far back as the Great Migrations.

Because of the natural resources and the convergence of trade routs, Huns, Vandals, Gepids, Goths, Avars, etc. frequently alternated with one another in this area.

In the first phase of the reign of the Árpád Dynasty, this area was inhabited by populous communities.

The first written mention of Szoboszló dates back to 1075, when King Géza I. donated half of Szoboszló's royal duty taxes to the new abbacy to be stablished at Garamszentbenedek.

With this deed of gift, decorated with his coat of arms and dated on 2nd September 1606, István Bocsaki, Prince of Transylvania porvided homes for 700 Hajdú ( Heyduck) cavalrymen at the side of Szoboszló, which had vormerly been destroyed by the Tartars of Crimea.

This is why the prefix " Hajdú" was attached to the settlement's name of Slavonic origin.

But this for-Hajdúszoboszló- only became whidespread in the 19th century.

The town led the customary, toilsome life of the samll every agricultural, stock-breeding tows of Hajdú Couty, until the end of the first third of the 20th century.

Thy upswing of the town commenced form 26th October 1925, with the breaking up of theraml sprig.

The medicinal warter received an ever increasing role.

The town's development into a resort place started, however, agriculture retained its significan role even after the discovery of the " second treasure", the gas field.

Szoboszló Today

Hajdúszoboszló is a more than 900 year old small town in the Great Hungarian Plain, 200 km far from Budapest, 20 km far from Debrecen. Bocskai István, the prince of Transsylvania settled Hajdús over here in 1606. The date in the Document of Settlement is 2nd of September, the celebration day of the town.

Ferenc Pávai Vajna, leading geologist was looking for carbohidrates, when he discovered the amazing 73 0C water with natural gas in the 26st October, 1925. The unique treasure of water, and the spa made this town the "Mekka of Rheumatics" and the "Paradise of Bather". In the past few years billion forint worth innovations were happened: the medical spa renewed, different hotels and new facilities were built. Today this town, wich contains almost 24.000 inhabitants, is characterized by dveloped infrastructure and great variety of touristical servicies.

The healthtourism-center is situated in a 36 ha park, where the whole family, young and old can have great time. In 1999 and 2002 the Medical Spa and its services were improved. The medical water has positive effects mostly on the chronicle locomotor disease. The visitors experience the most modern medical treatment and wellness services.

Hungary's first and biggest water-amusing park, the Aquapark is presented in 2000. The big open-air bath also renwed in the 75th anniversary of the bathing complex: 13 pools, a 6200 sqm artifical seaside, and lots of other aquatical experience can be the part of the visitors' holiday.

The all-year-round open campsite, an international-quality in-door swimming pool, the Hotel Thermal Terapy and its services, and the Medical Spa Inc.'s travel agency are also at the service of tourism.

The visitors' entertainment is proved by different programms. The Folkweekend in July and the Dixieland Festival in August are traditionally organized programms in the open-air theater in Festival Square. In the evenings music groups provides music for dancing in the Beertent. There are also other possibilities for song and dance all around the town, including the resturants of the Main street and the Mátyás Király promenade as well. In the Hotel Mátyás Király you can also find the traditionally organized Renaissance- and mediterranian evenings.

The carriage driving and show-jumping can be seen in every first weekend of August in the local airfield.

The spa festivals are very popular in July and August with the firework shows and beauty contests.

Besides entertainment, it worth having a walk in the town to get acquainted with the statues and historical monuments as well as visiting the local museums.
