Balaton Region
The flourishing traditions, architectural sights, traditional programmes of this settlement, which is more than 500 years old, are significant touristic attractions. During the 15th and the 16th centuries a great number of Dalmatian, Illyrian and Croatian families settled down in this area and the traditions they brought proved to be determinant in the lives of the people living here. Such a unique culture began to develop that is typical only of this community.
The three types of traditional embroidery - the so-called "vézás" and the "rátétes" that are stitched with blue and red or black and red thread and the multi-coloured "boszorkányos" - are still produced by the women in the village. You can take a look at these marvellous masterpieces, for sometimes 8 to 10 women can be seen in one group making embroideries in summer.
The most wonderful pieces of all three types can be seen throughout the whole year in a permanent exhibition in the Village Hall, which was built in 1997, and in the Village Museum.
The most ancient monument in the village is the one-naved Romanesque White Chapel that has a round-arched shrine. It used to be the parish-church of a perished settlement from the Middle Ages by the name of Akts. Its Renaissance carved wooden altar, which is decorated with foliation and which was built in 1704, can now be seen in the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church was consecrated in 1791; its rich collection of chasubles stitched with Buzsák embroidery and altar-cloths is well-known throughout the whole country.
In the thatched wine-cellars of the cellar-row on Mt. John vineyardists offer their wines in a wonderful natural environment.
At the Whitsun Meeting and the Church-ale in Buzsák various folklore programmes and a folk art fair, during the Vintage Days a wine judge election, a wine competition and a vintage fandango await visitors. You can familiarize yourself with the ancient song and dance culture at the performances of the Tradition Preserving Folk Dance Group and the women's choir.
Csisztafürdő, which is situated 5 km away from Buzsák, is visited by many people because of its 42°C-warm medicinal water that is rich in minerals, hydrocarbonate and sulphur. It can be accessed from the shore of Lake Balaton on a narrow-gauge train from the railway station in Balatonfenyves. The journey itself is a real adventure, especially for families with children.
