Bátonyterenye

Bátonyterenye is located on the eastern part of the county Nógrád, at the meeting point of the mountain Mátra and Cserhát. It is 100 km from Budapest away, and 30 km from the border of Slovakia.

Accessibility: from Budapest to Hatvan on the highway M3, from Hatvan to Bátonyterenye on the mainroad 21. It is also accessible by train, on the Budapest-Hatvan-Somoskő railroad.

Bátonyterenye is made up of Nagybátony, Kisterenye, Maconka and Szúpatak.

The area of Bátonyterenye called "the gate of the Palocland" as the hritage of centuries. It's also called by that name, because of the still surviving "palóc" dialect, the region ethnic dishes, and ethnic styled peasent houses.

The region's biggest values are the almost untouched, romantic and picturesque nature and the historical settlement structure. It has got a very rich ethnic culture, the people here take care of their traditions and customs, and they show it on Festivals. The National Blue Trail is a very popular destination for the tourists.

There are lot to see arond here, and there are nice Guesthouses and Restaurants in the town.

Archeological findings prove, that the site was inhabited as early as 1500 B.C.

In the 16th century the town became target of Turkish attacks and was destroyed several times.

The town used to belong to the Almásy and Gyürky families in the 18th and 19th century.

The baroque style Castle of Solymosy -in Kisterenye-was bulit in the 17th century. Today there is an art exhibiton can be seen here.

Coaol mine works used to be significant- at the present it is not operating at all. The local people are still celebrating there old tradition, for example on the the Townsday, when they hold the pageant of the "Bányarémségek" (snags).
