Szilvásvárad lies on the West side of the Bükk mountains, 160 kms from Budapest, 30 kms from Eger. The area has been ihabited from ancient times - this is proven by the remnants of the Paelolithic Age found in the Istállókői cave, a trench from the late Bronz Age called "the Turkish trench", Celtic and Scythian remnants.
Three hundred and foruty five meters above sea level, the settlement, thanks to its advantegous climate and sights, has been an international holiday resort since 1971. The village is surrounded by four hills - Istállókői, which is 958 m high, Őrkő 880 m, Gerenna-forest 758 m, Kalapat 600 m which provide exciting tourist paths for those longing to climb the peaks. In the area of Bükk National PArk, the Szalajka valley can be visited on foot, by bicycle or by aha narrow-gauge railway going through th woods, where we can find ponds full of trout, and the unique Veil-Waterfall cascading down on a natural tufa formation. The open-air Forest Museum and Forestry Museum provide valuable information for anyone interested.
